Sweet corn is a frost-tender, direct-sown grass with one structural planting requirement most vegetables don't share: because it's pollinated by wind blowing pollen from the tassels at the top down onto the silks below, it needs to be planted in blocks of multiple short rows rather than one long single row, or pollination fails and ears come out with missing kernels.

Beyond field corn and popcorn, different categories of sweet corn itself - standard sweet (su), sugary enhanced (se), and supersweet (sh2) - can cross-pollinate with each other in ways that dull the supersweet types' signature high sugar content specifically, which is a narrower but real version of the same isolation problem worth knowing if growing more than one sweet corn category in the same season.
Keep Different Corn Types Isolated
Sweet corn, popcorn, and field corn cross-pollinate readily if planted too close together and flowering at the same time, and cross-pollination can noticeably dull sweet corn's flavor and texture in the kernels affected - staggering planting dates so different types don't tassel and silk simultaneously, or keeping them physically well separated, avoids this.

Is sweet corn realistic to grow in containers given how much space a proper block needs?
It's possible but genuinely marginal - you'd need several large containers grouped tightly together to approximate a block, and corn's extensive root system and height make it a much less forgiving container candidate than compact crops like lettuce or peppers. Most gardeners working with limited space get more usable food per square foot from a different crop and are better off skipping corn unless they have real in-ground room for a proper block.
I already planted a single row before realizing that's a problem - is there anything I can do now to improve pollination?
Hand-pollination can genuinely help at this point - once tassels are shedding pollen, shake or tap them over a cup to collect it, then dust or dab the collected pollen directly onto the silks of each ear a few times over the pollen-shedding period. It's extra work compared to letting a proper block handle it on its own, but it can meaningfully fill in the gaps a single row's wind pollination would otherwise miss.
Does the direction I position different corn types relative to each other matter, or is distance all that counts?
Distance is the main factor, but wind direction plays a real secondary role - pollen travels further downwind than it does across or against the prevailing wind, so placing the type you most want to protect (supersweet, for instance) upwind of other corn types, or adding a windbreak like a tall crop or structure between them, reduces cross-pollination risk beyond what straight-line distance alone would suggest.
